Mosaics
mo·sa·ic | \ mō-ˈzā-ik
:a surface decoration made by inlaying small pieces of variously colored material to form pictures or patterns.
also : the process of making it.
According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, the above is the definition of mosaics - but it is so much more. Head for the Hills' mosaic works reflect this sense of "more." From the idea, to the drawings, the routering, cutting/grinding, placements, and grouting, creating mosaic art is a process that shines through with a beautiful end result.
Custom designs are always a welcomed challenge! Below you can catch a glimpse into the process of creating one of these works of art. Featured in these pictures is a custom commercial creation made specially for the nationally known Black Hills Burger & Bun Co.
The Drawing
The drawing is the first step once the idea has evolved.
The Routering
This essential step lays the channels for the placement of pieces (a special thanks to my husband Dave for this work.)
The Placement & Grouting
Tedious and time-consuming, this step involves shaping the glass with a grinder in order to get a perfect fit. It is also the most satisfying step as I can begin to see so much color and the design coming together towards completion!
The Base
Creating a solid base and surface is the next step. Old barnwood with character is our "ace of base."
The Finding, Sorting, and Shaping
An ever-changing process that, if ever omitted, would leave you with, well, just a nicely routered board.
The Finished Product
...and DONE!
